Michael Chicorea.jpg

"Surrounded by music his entire life, Michael is a career pianist and educator.  He recently returned to school with the intention of completing a masters in music education. His experience both as a gigging musician, sound tech, and teacher provide a unique basis for his style of teaching. Instead of teaching music using a linear approach, Michael views music education like a puzzle.  Each area of music is a puzzle piece, and we can begin to see the entire picture even if every piece isn't in place.  This method allows a student to grow musically without feeling bored or overwhelmed.  Each lesson is tailored to the goals and interests of the student.  Areas of study include technique, improvisation, all genres ranging from Classical to Pop, thorough understanding of chords, composition, and all other aspects of musicianship."

Steve Johnson Jr. started playing the bass guitar at the age of 14.  From then on, a passion to explore, learn and grow has led to the deepest depths of music.  Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Rhode Island College and a master’s degree in music education/composition from the University of Rhode Island.  Steve has achieved level I in Orff-Schulwerk.

Steve is a multi-instrumentalist, specializing in the plucked stringed instruments.  He has played electric bass in countless bands, as a contributing member and sideman, in just about every style from pop and rock to jazz and country.  For the past seven years, he has focussed on adding acoustic guitar into the mix, working with pop music duos and trios.  As of late, his new passion has been playing ukulele.

Steve is also an active composer.  He wrote his first song at 15 years old, aptly titled “15.”  Since then, he has written and performed songs in a variety of bands including his now defunct jazz fusion outfit, Baba Yaga, as well as his not-soon-to-be-defunct rock band Allswell.  For the past 4 years, Steve has worked as the composer for the independent film group “Chickens Vs. Sputnik” and has participated in many 48 hour film festivals.  His latest compositional endeavor is composing children’s songs for use in elementary general music classrooms.

Above all, Steve values the importance of musical education.  He has taught in several public and private schools, including, for the past 10 years, Westerly Public Schools.  He has also been giving private lessons for over 20 years.  He believes in following the student’s musical passions and supporting those interests with fundamental concepts and techniques on the instrument.  Basically, “learn to play what you like and build the skills from there.”
